97-Year-Old Black Mom Froze to Death, It Seems Her Daughter Intentionally Left Her in the Cold

The tragic death of 97-year-old Corrye Brewer, an African American woman from El Paso County, Colorado, has now been officially ruled a homicide.

Corrye Brewer succumbed to hypothermia after being intentionally left exposed to the cold on January 24 in Cape Town, South Africa. Authorities say the elderly woman, who suffered from cognitive impairments and relied on daily medication, was abandoned outside an unoccupied house in a secluded part of the city.

Brewer's body was discovered days later in the harsh conditions of the area, where temperatures had plunged well below freezing, and rainstorms had swept through the region. Authorities allege that Brewer was left outside without her walker, mobile phone, or any means to get help. At the time of her abandonment, the weather was dangerously cold, with temperatures dipping into single digits, creating a perfect storm of risk for anyone left outside.

The South African Coroner's Office has confirmed that Brewer’s cause of death was hypothermia, which directly resulted from her neglect. She was found in the exact spot where she was left, with no shelter or assistance nearby.

Authorities investigating the case have revealed that Brewer’s cognitive issues made her especially vulnerable, leaving her without the ability to protect herself or seek assistance. Her family, devastated by the loss, has asked for justice and accountability for her death.

Brewer’s grandson spoke to local media, stating, "Somebody needs to be held accountable for what happened to her. This shouldn't have happened." Although no arrests have been made yet, the authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her tragic death, with reports suggesting that the person responsible for abandoning her may be a close relative.

The case remains under active investigation, and local police have yet to release further details. The community of Cape Town has rallied behind Brewer's family, urging law enforcement to ensure that justice is served for the elderly woman’s untimely and heartbreaking death.
