"Athenkosi Kwinana" The Art of Advocacy and Inclusion

A mission to change the narrative surrounding persons with albinism through powerful artwork.

In a world where diversity often remains underrepresented in mainstream art, Athenkosi Kwinana Kwinanaaaa is a breath of fresh air. Born in 1995 in Eastern Cape, South Africa, the Johannesburg-based visual artist and activist is on a mission to change the narrative surrounding persons with albinism (PWA) through her powerful artwork.

Athenkosi's journey in art began with a National Diploma in Fine Art from Walter Sisulu University in 2017, followed by a Bachelor of Technology in Fine Arts in 2018. Currently, she's pursuing a Master's in Fine Arts at the University of Johannesburg. Her work bridges drawing and printmaking, providing a unique perspective on PWA's lives and experiences.

The heart of Athenkosi's work lies in advocating for the rights of PWA, a community frequently subjected to systemic violence, discrimination, and derogatory labels. By leveraging her artistic talents, she aims to combat harmful prejudices while promoting empathy and understanding.

Informed by postcolonial theory, black feminist discourse, and human rights frameworks,

Athenkosi's art delves into the portrayal of PWA within South African visual culture. Her research combines intersectionality, identity politics, and black female subjectivity to interrogate the ways in which albinotic bodies have been misrepresented or marginalized.

As a person with albinism herself, Athenkosi embraces an autoethnographic approach, merging personal experiences with broader socio-political narratives. Her work sheds light on the lived realities of PWA and underscores the need for policy reform, representation, and social justice.

What truly distinguishes Athenkosi's work is its deeply personal yet universally resonant message. Her art is not merely about raising awareness—it's a call to action. By using art as a transformative tool, she strives to foster visibility, dignity, and social change.

Don't miss your chance to see Athenkosi Kwinana's captivating work at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair from February 21 to 23, 2025, at the Berman Contemporary Booth.
